Opera Memphis Hosts Auditions for Annual Summer Conservatory Programs

Each summer Opera Memphis’ award-winning Education and Outreach Department hosts two educational conservatories, each attended by more than 30 area students. Students learn the process of opera from audition to production, and many go on to work in Opera Memphis mainstage productions or continue their music/production education beyond high school.

Auditions will be held at the Clark Opera Memphis Center at 6745 Wolf River Parkway in East Memphis on Friday, March 19 from 4pm to 6 pm and Saturday, March 20 from 10am to 2pm. No appointments necessary. Students are asked to prepare one selection in classical vocal music style, with or without accompaniment. An accompanist will be provided at no charge. CD accompaniment is acceptable. Auditions are open to potential students ages 8-20 and are required in order to be accepted to one of the conservatories. If open audition attendance is not possible, please contact Sarah Squire, Director of Education and Outreach at 901.202.4548 or sarah@operamemphis.org to make other arrangements. Students are placed in Junior or Senior Conservatory based on vocal development, and scholarships are available.

Junior Conservatory
For the beginning student, Junior Conservatory introduces students to vocal coaching and group work. Students spend two weeks preparing a complete opera production, and the process concludes with a fully staged performance. Junior Conservatory will be held at the Clark Opera Memphis Center June 7-18, 2010 and is suitable for ages 8+. Cost is $300 per student.

Senior Conservatory
Senior Conservatory prepares students up to age 20 for a college major in vocal arts and/or a vocal music career. Students receive vocal coaching and are introduced to all aspects of opera production and performance. Sessions include audition training and master classes from world-renowned artists such as Kallen Esperian and Greer Grimsley. Students rehearse familiar opera vignettes in an atmosphere similar to regional theatre rehearsals and leave the conservatory program with audition-ready pieces in their repertoire. The two week rehearsal process concludes with a fully staged performance. Senior Conservatory will be held at the Clark Opera Memphis Center July 12-23, 2010 and is suitable for ages 14+. Cost is $400 per student.

Opera Memphis’ Education and Outreach Program is sponsored by ArtsMemphis, the Tennessee Arts Commission, Mr. Mark McCowan, Dr. Jane Walters and Mr. & Mrs. J. William Himmelreich.
